POLICE DEPARTMENT

Spike in Thefts from Vehicles
On July 11, 2012, the Sausalito Police Department took three theft-from-vehicle reports.  The crimes occurred sometime between 6 p.m. on July 10th and 8 a.m. on July 11th.  The crimes occurred inside parking garages located in the 100 block of South Street and on Bulkley Avenue.  Two of the three vehicles had items of value left in plain sight. Items stolen included a laptop computer, camera, IPod and two cellular telephones. The estimated loss is $1000.

During a neighborhood canvass, officers located a ransacked vehicle in the 100 block of Bulkley Avenue.  Officers were unable to contact the owner of the vehicle to determine what was taken.

The SPD is asking anyone who may have seen any suspicious people or vehicles in the area between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to contact us at 415-289-4170.

** Crime Prevention Tip **

When parking your vehicle, items of value should never be left in plain sight.  It takes a criminal a matter of seconds to smash a window and steal small items such as cameras and purses.  As part of our crime prevention program, nighttime officers routinely walk residential foot beats looking for unlocked vehicles.  When an unlocked car is found, officers will attempt to secure the vehicle as well as leave a courtesy notice for the owners about the importance of locking their car doors.

DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint
Last Friday evening, the Sausalito Police Department, along with many other Marin County Law Enforcement Agencies, conducted a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Bridgeway, between Coloma Street and Gate 5 Road.  The operation began at 6:20 PM and ran until approximately 11:30 PM.  A total of one thousand, six hundred and fifty-four (1,654) vehicles went through the checkpoint.  Of these vehicles, one thousand, six hundred and thirty (1,624) were screened and thirty (30) were passed through unscreened due to emergency fire vehicle traffic needing to pass through.

Results of the operation were:

One driver were arrested and booked for DUI.
Thirty-one field sobriety tests were performed.
One driver operating with a suspended license was arrested, cited, and released.
Five unlicensed drivers were arrested, cited, and released.
Fourteen moving and safety violations were issued.
One vehicle was impounded.
One driver was arrested for displaying a stolen license plate.

This checkpoint was the part of the Avoid the Marin 13 Grant.  It was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
