 Build a Better World SUMMER READING PROGRAM
at the Sausalito Public Library
June 10-August 4

Between Saturday, June 10, and Friday, August 4, kids are invited to join us for a summer of reading, imagination, and working together to create a better world. We’ll have great performances and programs, plus our annual Reading Challenge. Download the Build a Better World flier.


READING CHALLENGE
All kids 12 and under are eligible for the Reading Challenge—whether they’re reading to themselves or listening to stories read aloud. Reading Challenge participants sign up at the Sausalito Library, and then visit the Library to get a prize after every three hours they read until they have read for 12 hours. *Prize Alternative: Kids can choose to skip the prize and support San Francisco Marin Food Bank or the Marine Mammal Center. Ask for details at the Reference Desk.

Creativity Club  Mondays, 3:30-5pm
for ages 10-12
Edgewater Room
  Join us for any (or all!) of these special events. We’ll have snacks, of course. Please arrive at 3:30pm, if possible.

June 26: Tie-Dye
Make a one-of-a-kind book bag or t-shirt with an alternative tie-dye technique using sharpies.

July 3: Make a Nature Journal
 Using special bookmaking tools, make a nature journal for recording your observations of the world around you.

July 10: 5th-7th Grade Book Club
See June 12, above. We’ll choose July’s book at the June meeting. **Special start time, 4:15pm

July 17: The Great Sausalito Cupcake Decorating Contest
We’ll provide the cupcakes and cake-decorating supplies, you supply the imagination and steady-hand. Winners will be chosen in two categories: ‘Most Imaginative’ and ‘Most Professional.’

July 24: Build a Neighborhood/Build a Story
In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of block printing. You’ll create your own neighborhood and all of the people (or critters!) who reside there. Then, using a few simple steps, you’ll write your own story to go along with your block printing creation. With Bethanie Murguia!

July 31: Scavenger Hunt
Get ready to use your detective skills and eagle eyes to solve clues throughout City Hall. There will be prizes!

Perfect for ages 4+ but everyone is welcome
Robin Sweeny Patio
  Magic, music, jokes & more on the Robin Sweeny Patio. Bring a blanket to sit on & get ready to enjoy the show.

June 27: Cascada de Flores
Musicians and storytellers Cascada de Flores will bring their bilingual, participatory storytelling and songs to Sausalito.

July 11: Bubbles!
This performance really pops! Join Michael Ashe, the San Francisco Bubble Man, for an effervescent afternoon.

July 18: Magical Nathaniel
Magic, jokes, mystery, and audience participation!

July 25: Magical Moonshine Theater presents Chanticleer the Rooster
A rooster is caught by the flattering fox…but foxes can be fooled as well. Sausalito favorites Magical Moonshine bring a new puppet show featuring live music, dynamic storytelling and adorable puppets. Not to be missed!

August 1: Musical Robot
Combining catchy tunes, out of this world dance moves, and tons jokes, this musical duo (ukulele and drum!) will help us finish the summer with a shake and a giggle.

June 28: Drive-In Movie The Lorax (2012, PG, 93min)
Decorate a ‘car’ at 3pm, Movie starts at 3:30pm
Come at 3pm to decorate your own ‘car’ and stay for the movie and popcorn. In The Lorax, a young boy meets a grumpy but lovable creature known as the Lorax while searching for a rare tree.

July 5: Build-It/Smash-It
What is better than constructing something amazing, huge, spectacular, astonishing…and then knocking it down with a triumphant yowl? Or growl. Or whoosh…the sound effects are up to you! We’ll provide the supplies, you provide the construction and destruction power.

July 12: Make Your Mark, Make a Book Mark
 Readers need book marks, we’ll have all the supplies you need to create your very own, 100% unique book mark.

July 19: Drive-In Movie
Decorate a ‘car’ at 3pm, Movie starts at 3:30pm
Come at 3pm to decorate your own ‘car’ and stay for the movie and popcorn.

July 26: Construction Crew, Round 2
We’re back at it! Come to a second round of building challenges. We have Legos, marshmallows, Magna-tiles, spaghetti, cardboard, tape, blocks, newspaper….come be an engineer, architect, and construction worker all at once.

August 2: Book Dominoes
Line them up one by one, and then knock them down! Join us to make a domino chain with books.
   
Creative Movement for Preschoolers Mondays, July 10, 17, 24 & 31
Ages 3-5
2:30-3:30pm, Exercise Room
   Join Jenna from Maligrad Dance Company for four afternoons of creative movement, dance, music, and storytelling. This fun environment will nurture children's creativity. Children do not need to attend all four weeks.
