Occupy & Other Love Stories: An evening with author Daniel Coshnear

Movie Night: It Came from Beneath the Sea
Thursday, August 21 -- 9:30pm inside the Library
Movie night returns with low-budget, sci-fi horror in the form of 1955’s It Came from Beneath the Sea, with special effects by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. In the film, San Francisco is menaced by a giant octopus that has been driven from its usual habitat by nuclear tests in the South Pacific. We’ll bring out the popcorn, unfurl the Library’s new 12’ x 9’ screen, and fire up the projector at 9:30pm.

Movie Night: Dr. Strangelove
Thursday, August 28 -- 9:30pm inside the Library
Summer movie night comes to an end with a tip of the hat to longtime Sausalito resident Sterling Hayden, who stars as the unhinged, communist-hating General Jack D. Ripper in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 black comedy, Dr. Strangelove. Peter Sellers (who plays three roles), George C. Scott, and Slim Pickens join Hayden in a memorable cast. Former No Name Bar owner Neil Davis will be on hand to share Sterling Hayden stories before the show.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT A MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION

Project Title:   The Valhalla Residential Condominiums

Location:    201 Bridgeway / 206 Second Street (APNs 065-242-17 and 065-242-06), Sausalito

Project Description & Background:
The project would redevelop the former Valhalla site and building at 201 Bridgeway by renovating and re-configuring the Valhalla structure to accommodate seven residential condominium units. The project would also maintain the existing single-family residence located at 206 Second Street. In total, the project would add approximately 600 square feet of new floor area to the existing 9,290 square feet of building space on the Valhalla property, for a total of approximately 10,000 square feet of floor area. Additionally, approximately 600 square feet of floor area would be removed from the existing 2,018 single-family residence at 206 Second Street. The subdivision map for the project would create a separate parcel for the single-family residence and air space condominium ownership areas for the seven residential units, exclusive common areas, and common areas. The project’s discretionary actions include approval of an Initial Environmental Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration, General Plan map amendment, Zoning Map amendments, Tentative Subdivision Map, Planned Development Permit, Design Review Permit, Condominium Conversion Permit, Encroachment Agreement, and a recently-added Floodplain Variance, as well as approval by the Bay Conservation and Development, US Army Corps of Engineers, and Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The Public Review Draft of the Initial Environmental Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IES/MND) for the project was released for a public review period which began on April 1, 2014 and concluded on May 14, 2014. Responses to comments received during the public review period were prepared and incorporated into the Final Draft IES/MND dated June 18, 2014. Prior to adoption of the Final Draft IES/MND, the City determined that a Supplement to the Final IES/MND was required to address project revisions including reconstruction of the Main Street boardwalk at a lower elevation than required by the City’s floodplain regulations and retention of the Bridgeway boardwalk at a lower elevation than required by the City’s floodplain regulations. Other revisions include the addition of a public beach access ramp at the foot of Main Street, a bus pullout along the project site’s Second Street frontage, and a single-car garage. While the determinations in the Final Draft IES/MND (dated June 18, 2014) remain applicable with the project revisions, the Supplement to the Final IES/MND addresses potential environmental impacts related to the project revisions.

The Supplement to the Final IES/MND, along with the Final Draft IES/MND (dated June 18, 2014), will constitute the IES/MND in its entirety.

The project requires approval of the following discretionary actions by the City:

Environmental Review. The Valhalla Residential Condominiums Initial Environmental Study / Mitigated Negative Declaration, prepared in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act. This document analyzes the potential impacts caused by the project and identifies various measures to mitigate these impacts.

General Plan Map Amendment. To change the site’s land use designation from Neighborhood Commercial to High Density Residential.

Zoning Map Amendment. To change the site’s zoning designation from Neighborhood Commercial (CN-1) to Multi-Family (R-3) to allow residential Use on the ground floor. Amend the Zoning Map to add a Planned Development (PD) Overlay District.

Planned Development Permit. Allow for master planning of the site and flexibility in the application of the City’s development standards in some areas of the project.

Tentative Subdivision Map. To create seven residential condominiums, common areas, and a separate parcel for the existing single family residence at 206 Second Street.

Design Review Permit. For demolition, renovation, and restoration of the portions of the existing Valhalla building for residential units, and the construction of a new two-story condominium duplex.

Condominium Conversion Permit. For conversion of the existing Valhalla building into residential condominiums.

Encroachment Agreement. For private improvements within the public right-of-ways.

Floodplain Variance. For reconstruction of the Main Street boardwalk at a lower elevation than required by the City’s floodplain regulations and retention of the Bridgeway boardwalk at a lower elevation than required by the City’s floodplain regulations.

In addition, the project requires approval by the Bay Conservation and Development, US Army Corps of Engineers, and Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Review Period:   August 12, 2014 to September 10, 2014

Public Meetings:   The Planning Commission will take public comments on the Supplement to the Final Initial Environmental Study / Mitigated Negative Declaration at 6:30 p.m. on September 3, 2014. All meetings will be held in the City of Sausalito Council Chambers, 420 Litho Street, Sausalito.

Comments:    Any written comments on the document must be received prior to the conclusion of the review period noted above. Public testimony will be accepted at the public meeting noted above. Monday, 7:30 P.M to 5:00 P.M. Tuesday through Thursday, and 7:30 A.M to noon on Fridays) and the City of Sausalito Library (open every day) located in City Hall, 420 Litho Street, Sausalito and on the City’s website. The project plans are available for viewing at the Community Development Department. For questions regarding the project or to review a copy of the draft Supplement to the Final IES/MND or a copy of the Final Draft IES/MND (dated June 18, 2014) please contact Community Development Director Jeremy Graves, AICP at (415) 289-4133. Staff reports will be available on the City’s website on the Friday preceding the Planning Commission meetings. Any written comments on the project must be received by the Planning Commission prior to the close of the public review period noted above.

SAUSALITO VILLAGE - Save the Date for a special Pole Walking Training Class - August 20

Sausalito Village will feature a special Pole Walking training class led by Jayah Faye Paley, at the Edgewater Room, Sausalito City Hall, 420 Litho Street, Sausalito, on Wednesday August 20, 11:30 to 2:30 P.M.. This training session will include personalized pole fitting and terrain practice as well as gait and balance exercises catered to the needs of a limited-size group. AYAH FAYE PALEY, fitness and wellness educator, presents hiking, walking and fitness seminars for national and state park associations and health related organizations around the country.Jayah, an AFAA & ACE-certified Personal Trainer, is the creator of the only comprehensive educational media on how to use poles, which includes two award-winning DVD's.

For over 15 years, she has trained people of all ages, abilities and physical conditions (such as Parkinson's, MS, arthritis, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, etc.) as well as athletes, trainers and physical therapists to use poles to achieve, regain and maintain mobility for hiking and walking. She has authored and delivers courses which provide continuing education credits for personal trainers.

This Month’s Tip  -  Home Sharing - Readily Available Affordable Senior Housing

The Age-Friendly Sausalito questionnaire revealed that over one third of residents 55 and older who responded to the survey, live alone. Most were homeowners. When you think about it, there are a lot of empty bedrooms in Sausalito - affordable housing readily available!

Home Sharing is simply renting a room in your home or apartment in exchange for rent or service exchange. The benefits can be more than just financial, sharing can provide companionship, security and assistance.

In Marin County, Episcopal Senior Homes runs a free referral and support service specifically for seniors who are looking to home share. The service provides third party assistance in finding a house mate by:
1. Providing personal interviews and needs assessments
2. Facilitating potential matches
3. Providing criminal background checks
4. Creating a shared housing agreement
5. Conflict resolution when needed

If you have ever been stuck in rush-hour traffic you understand the need for alternative transportation during a disaster or an emergency. During working or commute hours, the traffic speed in a City such as San Francisco, or surrounding locations such as Marin County, can be anything from a slow crawl to a complete stop. This congestion is already a major problem, and a disaster will make this exponentially worse.
