Sewer System Upgrades Information

Dear Property Owner:

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the City of Sausalito’s Sewer System Upgrades. In the coming months you will be receiving information in the mail as well. This site contains several essential documents and information about our plan to upgrade our sewer system to better protect the health and safety of our residents and our Bay.

The health and safety of our residents and protecting the Bay for future generations are important values of the City of Sausalito. In recent years there have been several sewage spills that have caused the release of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Bay. These spills pose a real threat to our environment and our health and safety.

Our sewer system is aging. We have over 27 miles of pipe in Sausalito that takes our waste water to treatment facilities. Some of these pipes are over 60 years old, made of clay, and are literally falling apart. Our system must be upgraded to ensure the safe removal of our waste water and to prevent hazardous sewage spills.

As a result of past sewage spills in the Bay, the City is under a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrative Order which legally requires the City to make health and safety upgrades to the sewer system.

Independent experts and City staff have spent the last year carefully analyzing our sewer system problems and developing plans for prudent upgrades to ensure compliance with the EPA order – avoiding expensive fines – and developing a plan that is fiscally responsible.

Please review the documents on this website. They provide important details on the capital improvements and on-going maintenance of our sewer system needed to ensure the protection of our environment and your health and safety. As part of this process, rate payers will be receiving a notice about a proposed, five-year rate structure that will allow the City to make these essential upgrades and qualify Sausalito for important state and federal dollars. A public hearing will be held on those rates on June 16 for the City Council to hear from the public and written protests against the proposed sewer fees can be sent to the City prior to or at that hearing.

Thank you for your interest and attention to our effort to serve the Sausalito community and do our part to keep the Bay clean. If you have any additional questions please feel free to e-mail me at apolitzer@ci.sausalito.ca.us.

Sincerely,
Adam W. Politzer
City Manager
