Tree Alteration Permit Application Instructions

  1. A tree alteration/removal permit is required to alter or remove any of the following:

    a) Coast Live Oaks measuring 12" or more in circumference at breast height (CBH).
    b) Any tree variety measuring 30" or more in circumference at breast height, except the following undesirable trees: Blue Gum Eucalyptus, Monterey Pine, Monterey Cypress or Coast Redwood, Black Acacia, Bailey Acacia, and Green Wattle.
    c) Any Dedicated Tree
    d) Any tree on private undeveloped property which measures 12" or more in circumference at breast height (CBM).
    e) Any tree or shrub on City owned property.

  2. Fill in all blank spaces on the application (PART A).

  3. Give your arborist a copy of the "Instructions for Preparing the Required Arborist Report" and have the report prepared for the proposed tree work. An arborist's report is required for all applications.

  4. If the application is for work on private property not belonging to the applicant, have the property owner fill in all the blank spaces on the application (PART B). The owner of the property on which the work is being done must print, or type their name, sign, and provide a telephone number where they can be contacted. Permission must be given to the arborist performing the work.

  5. Return Forms A and B (if applicable), the Arborist Report and envelopes addressed to residents and property owners of properties contiguous to that on which the tree work is being proposed to the Community Development Department, 420 Litho Street, Sausalito, CA 94965. There is no application fee for a permit to do work on private property. There is a $120.00 application fee for work to be done on City Property. This fee must be submitted with the application.

  6. You must obtain tags from the Community Development Department (CDD) to be placed on the trees for which cutting is requested. The tags must be placed on the trees within two days after the application submittal, and a copy of your completed application must be posted visibly on the street front of the lot on which the tree work is proposed. These shall remain in place for a minimum of ten days.

  7. Applications for work on City property will be reviewed by Dan Zepponi. Applications for work on private property will be reviewed by the Trees and Views Committee. The Trees and Views committee meets once a month. Applicants for work on private property will be notified of the date and time when their application is scheduled for consideration and are requested to attend the meeting.

  8. You will be notified if your application has been approved or denied. If it is approved you will be sent a permit to do the work. The permit must be clearly posted on the street front of the lot while work is under way.
