Groundbreaking for the City's Measure "S" Public Safety Facilities Police and Fire stations was held on October 31, 2008. Occupancy of the new, combined 14,605 square-foot facilities remains scheduled for Fall 2010. June signaled the end, for the most part, of the inclement weather that affected the progress of the project, in particular the site work. The buildings essentially have the full exterior complete and final finish work continued during the months of June and July.
The Fire Station site at 333 Johnson Street is at a further stage of completion when compared to the Police Station. The exterior of the building has been completed, with sunshades attached, site work completed, overhead apparatus bay doors installed, as well as the main entrances. Additional pieces of the site work, including handrails and landscaping are now complete.
The interior of the Fire Station is nearing substantial completion. Interior painting proceeded throughout the Station, and casework was installed in the kitchen area and other locations. Flooring was installed near the end of June. Mechanical and electrical trim out took place and was completed in June, with all outlets, lights, and air registers being installed. All that remains to be completed is the final installation of casework in some of the restrooms and some other areas and then the final plumbing fixtures will be put into place. The Fire Station is currently going through punch list activities, after which Glass Architects, the City and the Fire Department will conduct their punch list to register any of those items not installed per plan, or not functioning properly.
At the Police Station site at 29 Caledonia Street, work continued throughout the building and many activities took place.
At the exterior, the curbs, gutters, ramp entrance and entry stairs were all formed and poured in June.
On the inside, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work continued. Tile work also occurred in the Police Station restrooms and locker rooms. Base painting was also occurring during this month. The ceiling grids were placed early in the month of June, and substantially most of the acoustic ceiling tile was placed by the end of the month. Some equipment was also delivered including the lockers for the men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as shelving and storage units for the evidence room. While there is still much work to be accomplished in the Police Station, it is progressing satisfactorily.
Alten Construction has issued a revised schedule which currently calls for a Substantial Completion to occur on August 3rd, 2010. Once substantial completion occurs for the entire project (Fire Station, Police Station and site work), Alten will have 60 days to reach final completion. During this period, the City will begin moving in furniture, fixtures and equipment, as well as finalizing the installation of security and access control systems.
Currently, the City of Sausalito is redoing Johnson Street. While not officially part of the Public Safety Facilities project, the City has taken advantage of the opportunity to conduct some much needed work on the main sewer system that runs east along Johnson Street. Though this work is occurring while the PSF project is on-going, it will mean that local residents will have a new street, upgraded sewer systems, and a completed project. By doing this work now, the inconvenience to residents of doing the street work at a later time will be reduced.
Caledonia Street between Johnson and San Carlos is closed to through traffic while the construction and street improvements take place.
During construction, the Fire Station has moved to 300 Spencer Avenue. Dial 9-1-1 for emergencies (or from a cell phone dial (415) 472-0911) - for non-emergencies call (415) 388-8382.
